PIEDMONT IB MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND WIKI
MATT B. FORBIS, Director of Bands
THE DAY YOU RETURN FROM SPRING BREAK IS AN A DAY...WOODWINDS BRING YOUR INSTRUMENTS!
6th grade: We are currently on week 4.2 for practice journals.
7th and 8th grade: no journals this quarter. Practice checks/ formal testing instead (read below)
*Remember you MUST meet the goal for it to be counted and turned in for work. No journals will be returned if found to be unverified. These will from now on be considered dishonest work and will result in a “0” with parents contacted per the Piedmont Grading Policy*
ALL Journals will now count as informal homework grades only. Formal grades will only be formal assessments or formal performances.
(Due 4/4 A and 4/7 B)
(Due 4/11 B and 4/21 A)
I HIGHLY suggest that the woodwinds complete and submit this journal BEFORE spring break begins.
WW assignment: #81,82,83,84, any "circled" phrases from American Spirit March
Brass assignment: #80,81,83,84, any "circled" phrases from American Spirit March
*7th grade will NOT submit journals this quarter. Grades will all be informal playing checks based on the measures and songs they are required to prepare for rehearsal. Students will be asked to play any numbers of measures from the assigned material on the due date of the playing check. Informal grades may not be retested.
Each week listed below there will be a playing standard assessment to retest the performance of the 6 major scales learned this year along with the chromatic scale tested at the end of the quarter. These are formal assessments and can be tested in the mornings at band-aid tutoring, live in class, or by VIDEO recording (videos must be shot from behind the student as to prove that students are not reading music while performing scales). These formal assessments may only be retested during the standard 2 week window per the Piedmont Grading Policy.
The Spring Performance will count as three formal assessments (using a concert evaluation rubric) with a participation grade also being awarded at the completion of the performance. Students must have a C or higher average in band by the performance date in order to perform on the concert.

*8th grade will NOT submit journals this quarter. Grades will all be informal playing checks based on the measures and songs they are required to prepare for rehearsal. Students will be asked to play any numbers of measures from the assigned material on the due date of the playing check. Informal grades may not be retested. Once every three weeks, there will be a formal assessment given on the measures checked over those three weeks. These will be graded on a performance rubric and will follow the grading policy for formal assessments.
Interventions for Retesting: Retesting will be allowed in the mornings during tutoring for two weeks but will include an alternate assignment of having to play different measures than the first assessment. This material will still come from the material prepared during those three weeks. The retest will also include more material than the original assessment to account for the additional preparation time allowed in the retest window.
